Shipping a Payment Approval System End to End

Approve → Pay

Owning a system from the database schema to the deployment pipeline changes how you make decisions. Every shortcut you take early shows up later — usually at 5 PM on a Friday.

Start with the approval rules, not the UI

Payment approvals are mostly business rules: who can approve what, in which order, up to which amount. Modelling those rules in the database first made the backend simpler and kept the frontend honest.

Make every step auditable

Finance teams need to know who approved a payment and when. Storing every state change as its own record made reporting and debugging far easier than overwriting a single status column.

Automate the boring parts of deployment

Docker gave us the same environment everywhere, and a Jenkins pipeline turned releases into a routine instead of an event. Shipping small changes often is less risky than shipping big ones rarely.
